When I founded Amerital Advisory & Partners in 2014, my objective was to build an accounting and advisory practice that offered something more than preparing financial statements and tax returns.
My professional journey had already taken me through very different business environments. Before establishing Amerital, I worked in Australian public practice and subsequently in a senior corporate taxation and financial accounting role, advising privately owned corporate groups on taxation, restructuring, transactions, financial reporting and regulatory compliance.
But my experience did not begin in accounting.
Earlier in my career, I had the opportunity to work internationally in business development, investment and consulting roles across China, Singapore, India, the Middle East, Europe and the United States. Those experiences gave me first-hand exposure to businesses operating across different markets, cultures and regulatory environments.
When I later developed my professional career in Australia, completing my Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Adelaide with majors in Accounting and Corporate Finance and progressing through the CPA Australia program, I came to appreciate that good professional advice requires more than technical knowledge.
It requires an understanding of how a business actually works. That principle became one of the foundations of Amerital.
Why I Established Amerital
Business owners rarely experience accounting, taxation, finance and commercial decisions as separate issues. A decision to acquire a business, restructure a group, purchase a property, bring in an investor or expand internationally can have consequences across all of them.
I therefore wanted Amerital to develop as a practice where we first understand the client’s business and objectives, and then consider the accounting, taxation and regulatory consequences around them.
This means looking beyond the immediate question of “What do I need to lodge?” and also asking: “Why are we doing this, what are the risks, and is there a better way to structure it?”
That distinction continues to shape the way I approach professional advice today.
Building Amerital
Since its establishment in 2014, Amerital has developed from an accounting and taxation practice into Amerital Advisory & Partners, providing accounting, taxation, corporate and business advisory services.
As our clients and their businesses have become more sophisticated, the matters we advise on have also evolved.
Today, our work can involve traditional accounting and taxation compliance, but it can also extend to business and ownership structures, corporate taxation, financial reporting, transactions, investments, cross-border matters and complex regulatory requirements.
Despite that evolution, I believe the underlying principle of the practice should remain straightforward:
Understand the client first. Understand the numbers second. Then provide advice that brings the two together.
My Approach to Advisory
I do not believe the role of an accountant should be limited to explaining what happened last year.
Historical numbers are important, but they should also help us understand where a business is today and assist the client in considering what comes next.
My approach is therefore built around three things: understanding, practical advice and long-term relationships.
Clients should understand the reasoning behind the advice they receive. Advice should be technically sound but also commercially workable. And, where possible, an adviser should understand a client’s history and objectives rather than looking at each transaction in isolation.
After more than a decade of building Amerital, these remain important principles for me personally and for the direction in which I want the firm to continue developing.
Looking Forward
The accounting profession continues to change. Technology and automation are transforming the way routine accounting and compliance work is performed.
I see that change as an opportunity.
As technology takes care of more routine processes, professional advisers can spend more time doing what technology cannot easily replace — understanding circumstances, exercising professional judgement, identifying risks and helping clients make informed decisions.
That is the direction I see for Amerital Advisory & Partners: combining strong technical capability with commercial understanding and developing deeper advisory relationships with the people and businesses we serve.
